Flatbush Caton Honored for Excellence in Design
The Flatbush Caton Market was honored at the Twenty-Sixth Annual Art Commission Awards for Excellence in Design for the installation of new signage at the Market, a part of the revitalization of the area.
The new signage was created by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) in partnership with the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce (CACCI) and the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS). Inspired by Caribbean markets shipping typography, and a tropical palette, the Flatbush Caton Market signage announces a vibrant and eclectic marketplace.
Across the façade, custom-drawn type overlaps palm trees in iterations that change scale, shape, and color. Part of a larger renovation project that includes new entrances, an improved courtyard, and structural renovations, the signage utilizes existing conditions to maximize impact at minimum expense. The existing faded light blue exterior paint is retained, and revealed through voids in the new green and dark blue composition. To execute the design in the most durable and authentic manner, and eliminate the need for unsustainable vinyl graphics, the signage is hand-painted.
